rnTemperatures from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston will average 5 to 10 degrees below normal for this time of the year, with highs only reaching the 30s and 40s today and Sunday. Morning low temperatures will range from the teens in Boston to 20s in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, wind chills will be as low as the single digits to teens, with even more drastic wind chills as low as 20 to 30 degrees below zero across northern New York into northern Maine.
    rn
rnThis cold early March weather follows on the heels of what was already a chilly February. In Philadelphia, for instance, February finished 1.6 degrees colder than normal, and featured several snowy days. The month ended with 14.3 inches of snow total. Areas north and west of I-95 were similarly cold in February, while a major winter storm early in the month brought as much as two feet of snow in areas like Allentown, Pa.
    rn
rnThe only region that will need to watch for snowfall is the higher elevations of northern New York today. A fresh dusting is possible.
    rn
rnThe good news is that winter-like weather will come to a rapid end after the weekend. A ridge of high pressure in place across the Plains will surge eastward, bringing some of the warmest temperatures seen so far in 2021 for the Eastern Seaboard.
    rn
rnOtherwise, the mostly dry and chilly weather will allow for many ski resorts across the Northeast to be cold enough for snow making, especially in the mornings.
    rn
rnWhile we can’t put the parkas and gloves away just yet, spring is right around the corner. By the end of March, average high temperatures in Boston are typically 50 degrees, while in Washington D.C., average highs are in the lower 60s.”,”ImageLink”:”https://d3op7nfti4wt5l.cloudfront.net/commoncontent/files/e3/e3ed495f-cf4d-4b56-a036-9dd055b9cafb.jpg?Expires=1615259314&Signature=PxWsm-bD0-W9Rnj5ZOrqRyzGSnwl972Kc2o1Q47y-YdpTdVKi1o966iJ6ZnDnOKb5e39hjZvrH-MNQx7nCf7hD9MS-Xaxhp~eg7cei7lObobu70Qx627Epllb3yfB-PHsc04oMYuKa7JKXgwHxT2v~m30Wejbj0mLaZ484KcGXu3ri2nWSsiySRu~wuqIyVbhYH3ykP8HMnYvllBffceqGO6mMo74q09kArUruzqIMdK0eE02qxMRWn0tGrVRmTWMABI7aol1QxTO3KSRSETJoqgzc1Q7F83SE~hx2YryIUcl2kwpdSVnt-CODXmE5e5wUEcfytdaQ49t76aa95Fxg__&Key-Pair-Id=APKAIP6FQQ2BATJKEVCA”,”ThumbnailImageLink”:”https://d3op7nfti4wt5l.cloudfront.net/commoncontent/files/2c/2caa7ce9-f2ce-42b6-b7b9-1cf5a927ee12.jpg?Expires=1615254543&Signature=GeCbARNI~wTuLIQKyPoMmrML4zi1ZibRieoJ0H4zUK-dMRmVX8tOBN11jufrRWAiyGKm54QlKd8RJT4jJxhzlwXMuFpfGVqMljTb5~gave2H9UeXAsM8CiWArIR-PFeYxLCClVekSj~nvL0UGMKepFPH8C6FaeGWHkbKewG5fg409U97NDTuLgbM4bGpJLWbTSw9gAVD7XDkK3lmUwH4e9iB9Qfh42~k3WivZIeriBi626OfJE0o9uG1Fd1rZnRTNKXO8HcLcs-3LLF6nz~GFqCfWyMnWZYEYpN5k5mGp5WNRpcwiccLAPADeB5f-6PRQoRyjZVi9VOte9bP0NAroQ__&Key-Pair-Id=APKAIP6FQQ2BATJKEVCA”,”nextStoryUrl”:”/news/Video-Drone-Surveys-Flooding-in-Louisville,-Kentu”,”prevStoryUrl”:null,”Id”:7667,”Guid”:”050f0b06-65ba-4bbf-8d9a-8fa475ed3a7f”,”ClassName”:”WB.story”,”VideoLinks”:null,”CreatedWhen”:”2021-03-04T08:04:17.502Z”,”ModifiedWhen”:”2021-03-07T00:42:51.557Z”,”PublishWhen”:”2021-03-07T00:42:51.401Z”,”Url”:”/news/More-Blustery-and-Cold-Weather-in-Store-for-Northe”,”CreatedDate”:”2021-03-04T08:04:17.502+00:00″,”ModifiedDate”:”2021-03-07T00:42:51.557+00:00″,”PublishDate”:”2021-03-07T00:42:51.401+00:00″,”ImageCaption”:”Low Temperatures Sunday Morning”},{“Source”:null,”ContentTags”:[“drone”,”flooding”,”Kentucky”,”video”,”videos”,”Weather”],”NodeAlias”:”Video-Drone-Surveys-Flooding-in-Louisville,-Kentu”,”ByLine”:”By WeatherBug”,”Summary”:”Footage collected by a National Weather Service (NWS) drone shows the Ohio River in Louisville still in flood stage on Friday.”,”Title”:”Video: Drone Surveys Flooding in Louisville, Kentucky”,”Text”:”Aerial footage collected by a National Weather Service (NWS) drone shows the Ohio River in Louisville still in flood stage on Friday, March 5, after heavy rain affected rivers across the state earlier this week.

    rn
rnThe only problem spot will be the Northwest Sunday thanks to a Pacific storm bringing fresh rain showers to the coast during the morning and afternoon. As the day progresses, new snowfall will add to the mountain snowpack further inland across the Cascades into the northern Rockies.
    rn
rnDrier weather is expected for Florida in the wake of a storm system that swept through Saturday. However, the Sunshine State will remain quite breezy. Elsewhere, most of California, the Great Basin, Four Corners, Great Plains, Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee valleys, Great Lakes and East Coast will enjoy a dry and sunny day to conclude the weekend.
    rn
rnAs is typical of early March, high temperatures will vary wildly across the U.S. High will remain in the 20s, 30s and 40s from the Northeast into the Mid-Atlantic, while spring will make a comeback across the Southeast with highs in the 50s and 60s. An early spring thaw will remain deep in effect across the central U.S., with highs reaching well above average into the 60s and 70s, with a few 80s simmering the mercury in the Southwest.

    rn
rnAuthorities enacted a broad range of measures after wildfires killed more than 100 people in 2017.
    rn
rnThough officials said climate change, including higher temperatures and lower rainfall, was partly to blame for the destruction, experts also identified poor forest management and preparedness as a cause of repeated outbreaks.
    rn
rnAuthorities say they have opened more than 4,500 kilometers (2,800 miles) of firebreaks in recent years.
    rn
rnNobody has died in forest blazes in Portugal since 2017.
    rn
rnThe government concedes, however, that much remains to be done to address the underlying causes of wildfires.
    rn
rnThey include a migration of people from the countryside to urban areas, leaving large areas untended, and the large swathes of unbroken conifer forests and eucalyptus plantations, which are economically profitable but burn fiercely.

    rn
rnThe Cougar army helicopter went down on a snow-covered area close to the village of Cekmece, in the predominantly Kurdish-populated Bitlis province on Thursday. The victims included Lt. Gen. Osman Erbas, an army corps commander.
    rn
rnTwo military personnel survived the crash with injuries.
    rn
rnThe Defense Ministry statement said an initial inspection of the wreckage showed no evidence of an explosion or fire. There was also no meteorological warning prior to the flight, it added.
    rn
rn“In the light of the initial information, it is considered that the accident occurred due to adverse weather conditions that occurred as a result of a sudden change in weather conditions in the region,” the statement read.
    rn
rnThe ministry added that a more detailed technical inspection would determine the definitive cause.
    rn
rnThe location of the crash is in an area where Turkish troops have been combating militants of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which is considered to be a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people since 1984.
    rn
rnIn 1997, PKK militants attacked a Turkish Cougar helicopter in northern Iraq, killing 11 Turkish soldiers.
    rn
rnMore recently, 13 military personnel were killed in 2017, when a Cougar helicopter crashed into power lines shortly after take-off from a base near Turkey’s border with Iraq.

    rn
rnA central Croatian region about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of the capital, Zagreb, is pocked with round holes of all sizes, which appeared after December's 6.4-magnitude quake that killed seven people and caused widespread destruction.
    rn
rnScientists have been flocking to Mecencani and other villages in the sparsely-inhabited region for observation and study.
    rn
rn“These are so-called dropout sinkholes, and they appeared because of the specific geological composition of this area, as the soil rests on limestone rocks heavily saturated with groundwater,” said geologist Josip Terzic of the Croatian Geological Survey.
    rn
rnWhile the appearance of sinkholes is not unusual following strong seismic activity, residents have been baffled by their number — about 100 have been spotted over the past two months — and the speed at which they emerged after the main earthquake on Dec. 29, which was followed by a series of aftershocks. Geologists have said that the temblor accelerated the process of sinkhole formation that would normally have taken years, if not decades.
    rn
rnTerzic said scientists are planning various exploration methods to determine the underwater morphology and other characteristics. He spoke to The Associated Press as he stood beside a large sinkhole that he said was up to 15 meters (yards) deep and equally wide.
    rn
rnSome sinkholes have appeared by people's houses or on their farmland, prompting the authorities to advise caution. Nenad Tomasevic, a teacher from Mecencani, said it all seemed too much.
    rn
rn“The earthquake itself felt pretty unpleasant to say the least. And after that, these holes started popping up,” said Tomasevic, who had to move to a neighbor’s house after an expanding hole appeared in his backyard.
    rn
rn“Experts say that these sinkholes would have formed naturally anyway over time, but the earthquake acted as sort of a catalyst which sped up the whole process, unfortunately,” he added.
    rn
rnSome three months after the earthquake, the hardest-hit area is still struggling with its devastation, with many houses still in rubble and the region's main town, Petrinja, semi-abandoned. Occasional earthquakes, including those of magnitude 4 or more, can still be felt, further upsetting residents and adding to the coronavirus pandemic woes.
